Alabama Sen. Katie Britt responded to Saturday Night Live's (SNL) sketch mocking her rebuttal to President Joe Biden's State of the Union (SOTU) address last Thursday.
Britt delivered her rebuttal to Biden's SOTU speech while sitting in her family's kitchen. The Alabama senator said the president was "out of touch," and noted families were "worse off," adding communities had become unsafe under the Biden's administration.
Critics said Britt's rebuttal speech came across as inauthentic, while others noted the response resembled that of a theater student's performance.
Britt's speech was mocked by Scarlett Johansson, who portrayed the Alabama senator during a Saturday broadcast of the long-running sketch comedy show.
Britt responded to SNL's sketch during a Wednesday episode of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's podcast.
Cruz said corporate media went "nuts" over Britt's rebuttal and noted a distinct contrast between Biden's speech and the Alabama senator's response.
"We see Joe Biden standing there [at] the State of the Union. He's an old, cranky, bitter man yelling and screaming. ... He was the grumpy old man saying, 'Get off my lawn!'" Cruz said. "And then the contrast, you go to a young, happy beautiful mom sitting there talking about the issues facing American families."
"If you're a Democrat, if you're a partisan, this is a nightmare," he added.
The Texas senator said the contrast between Biden and Britt was "terrifying."
"You wanna sum up how corrupt the media really is, the cold open of Saturday Night Live, they have Joe Biden for like two minutes, and they just kinda have him as sort of a happy doddering [man]," Cruz said, "they don't have him screaming and bitter and angry. They don't have any of that."
Cruz praised SNL for portraying Britt with an attractive actress, saying the sketch comedy show never employs attractive actors to portray himself.
"I actually was pretty pumped about that," Britt said of Johansson's casting. "They bring in someone from Avengers to play me in the cold open, I’m here for it."
Cruz went on to discuss frequent negative portrayals of Republicans in other SNL sketches, noting he found his and Britt's to be funny.
"I have the honor of serving the great people of Alabama, but tonight I'll be auditioning for the part of scary mom," Johansson said during her portrayal of Britt. "And I'll be performing an original monologue called: This Country is Hell."
Johansson then quipped, "You see, I’m not just a mother, I’m a wife, a mother, and the craziest b---- in the Target parking lot.”
"Kitchens are where families have the hard conversations, like the one we'll have tomorrow about how Mommy freaked out the entire country," Johansson said.
