Sunny Hostin Insists Black Voters Will Turn Out For Biden Despite Polls Suggesting Otherwise

The View's Sunny Hostin expressed frustration with some polls suggesting former President Donald Trump has gained black voters, and insisted President Joe Biden would garner more of the black vote this November.

Hostin made her remarks during a Thursday broadcast of ABC's program as the panel discussed Trump and Biden's messaging to black voters.

Fellow co-host Joy Behar suggested Trump would "harm" black Americans, noting the former president had previously called for the death penalty for the 1989 Central Park Five assault and rape case in Manhattan.

"These kids were innocent, and he wanted to kill them," she said, further claiming the former president refused to sell or rent his New York City properties to "non-white people." Behar also took issue with Trump's suggestion that former President Barack Obama was not an American citizen.

Hostin claimed the former president's 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act disproportionately harmed black Americans.

"They are seeing a drop in black voters for Biden," said fellow co-host Sara Haines, noting specifically black male voters were defecting from Biden, according to some polls. "Like every other American, they're concerned with the economy."

Haines went on to suggest Trump's economy "tanked" due to his politicization of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.

"Although people are not feeling all of this relief ... [Biden] literally has the lowest unemployment level in 50 years," Haines said. "The messaging is not making it to the people."

Hostin took issue with Haines' suggestion, and cited several polls which report 83 percent of black registered voters identifying as or leaning Democratic, along with 81 percent of black men being registered Democrats.

“I don’t want to hear anymore that black men are voting for Trump,” she said before declaring: "Black women resoundingly will show up for Biden."

"They're gonna bring their sons, they're gonna bring their grandsons, they're gonna bring their husbands," Hostin continued as the audience erupted in applause. "The black vote will turn out for President Biden."

Haines countered Hostin's remark by noting Biden used to have a 92 percent following.

"The trend is down," she said, to which Hostin noted the election would not be held for another five months.

Fellow co-host Whoopi Goldberg then called the practice of polling into question, noting "maybe 1,000 people" had been surveyed for polls cited by Hostin.

"And then they say, 'That thousand represents everybody.' That is not so," she said. "The thing that's going to happen [is] people are gonna vote how they vote ... people are not gonna tell you who they're going to vote for."

Goldberg noted parents of her generation never disclosed their political candidates of choice.

"It wasn't something you discussed. So we're never going to know until we know," she said. "You can follow polls if you want to ... polls are not necessarily accurate."

According to an April Wall Street Journal poll, 30% of black men were considering throwing support behind Trump's re-election.
