UPDATE: J.D. Vance Agrees to Oct. 1 Debate with Tim Walz

UPDATE: Republican vice-presidential candidate J.D. Vance has agreed to debate his opponent, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

"The American people deserve as many debates as possible, which is why President Trump has challenged Kamala to three of them already," he wrote on X Thursday morning. "Not only do I accept the CBS debate on October 1st, I accept the CNN debate on September 18th as well. I look forward to seeing you at both!"

Democratic vice presidential-candidate Tim Walz has agreed to debate opponent J.D. Vance on Oct. 1.

In a Wednesday statement, CBS News said it had offered to host a debate between Walz and Vance in New York City with four proposed debates: Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, and Oct. 8.

"We look forward to their responses and providing voters with an opportunity to hear directly from the vice-presidential candidates," the outlet wrote.

CBS News' statement did not name any moderators or lay out specific rules for the proposed debate.

The Minnesota governor responded to CBS News' X post saying, "See you on October 1, JD," Walz wrote.

“Harris for President has accepted CBS' invitation to a Vice Presidential Candidate Debate on October 1," Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign said in a statement confirming Walz had agreed to the debate. "Governor Walz looks forward to debating JD Vance — if he shows up."

During a Wednesday evening appearance on Fox News with host Laura Ingraham, Vance said he and his team would look into CBS' moderators and rules, adding he strongly suspected he would accept the debate.

"But we're not gonna do one of these fake debates, Laura, where they don't actually have an audience there, where they don't actually set the parameters in a right way where you can have a good exchange of ideas," Vance said. “In other words, we’re not going to walk into a fake news media garbage debate."

"We're gonna do a real debate, and if CBS agrees to it then certainly we'll do it," he added.

During former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago press conference last week, Trump said his campaign had agreed to participate in a VP debate with CBS News.

In the week-and-a-half since Harris selected Walz as her running mate, the Minnesota governor's military record came under scrutiny as some accused him of stolen valor for depicting himself as a combat veteran despite having never been in conflict during his 24 years in the service, among other discrepancies surrounding his retirement from the military.

On Tuesday, Walz defended his military service and said, "You should never denigrate another person's service record."

"Anyone brave enough to put on that uniform for our great country, including my opponent, I just have a few simple words. Thank you for your service and sacrifice," Walz said.

Vance responded to a video of Walz's remarks in an X post.

"Hi Tim, I thank you for your service. But you shouldn't have lied about it," the Ohio senator wrote.

"You shouldn't have said you went to war when you didn't. Nor should you have said that you didn't know your unit was going to Iraq. Happy to discuss more in a debate," Vance added.
