Gov. Sununu Says Harris Uptick In Polls 'Honeymoon Phase'

'Things will settle. Folks will get back, talk to their family and friends, come off a summer vacation, put their kids in school, all that sort of stuff.'

Gov. Sununu Says Harris Uptick In Polls 'Honeymoon Phase'

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu said the recent uptick in polling for Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign was a "honeymoon phase" and would soon end.

Sununu made his remarks during a Sunday appearance on ABC News' This Week.

“This is the honeymoon,” Sununu said. “I mean, this is the honeymoon period. [Democrats] had the — if you will, the courage to push him off of the ballot. Vice President Harris is in there. The media is fawning. Everyone’s excited.”

The New Hampshire governor said the 2024 presidential election had become a "whole new race," though said Harris' uptick in polling would last for about a month.

“There’s no question. I think the Democrats can take that momentum into the convention,” he continued. “The first poll, I believe, that will actually matter, if I may, is the Wednesday after Labor Day. So, you’re going to have this 30-day honeymoon period. Things will settle. Folks will get back, talk to their family and friends, come off a summer vacation, put their kids in school, all that sort of stuff.”

“And you’re going to get back to numbers you saw about a month before the original debates, which is essentially a neck and neck race, or at least within the margin of error. Probably Trump up by a little bit nationally. Some of the swing states all in play. And it’s going to come back to issues,” he said. “The border issue, the inflation issue, these are some very real issues."

"It isn’t just going to be about, well, we need to vote for Vice President Harris because she’s a woman or she — we need to vote for her because it’s just a change and it’s not Donald Trump," he added.

Former President Donald Trump currently holds a 1.7-point advantage over Harris in aggregate polling, according to RealClearPolitics. Trump also holds a $0.03 advantage over Harris according to online political prediction market PredictIt.

Trump was scheduled to debate President Joe Biden for a second time in September prior to Biden's exit from the 2024 race. Though it remains unclear whether Trump or Harris will debate, Fox News has offered to host a debate between the two this September.
