The social media platform X has changed its rules to explicitly state that pornography is allowed on the platform.
X allows users as young as 13 to create accounts.
The platform has always been flooded with adult content, but the rules never clarified if it was allowed or not.
Tech Crunch reports, "That’s changing now. Over the weekend, X added clauses to its rules, formally allowing users to post adult and graphic content on the platform — with a few caveats. Users can now post consensually-produced NSFW content as long as it is prominently labeled as such. The new rules also cover AI-generated videos and images."
Users must mark the pornographic content so that it is not visible to minors or people who do not have their age in their profile.
X’s page on ‘adult content’ policies now states:We believe that users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed. Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression. We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality. We balance this freedom by restricting exposure to Adult Content for children or adult users who choose not to see it. We also prohibit content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviors. We also do not allow sharing Adult Content in highly visible places such as profile photos or banners.
X added, "This also applies to AI-generated, photographic or animated content such as cartoons, hentai, or anime."
Users can report pornographic images and videos that are not properly marked as adult content.
The move could make X a formal competitor to OnlyFans, with the new paid features including subscriptions and ad revenue sharing.
The platform also has a massive problem with porn bots replying to people's tweets with graphic images.
Tech Crunch noted, "About 13% of posts on the platform in 2022 contained adult content, according to a Reuters report in 2022 that cited internal company documents. Adult content on X has seemingly gone up since then, especially as porn bots have proliferated on the platform."
