Former President Donald Trump took aim at House Majority Whip and newly nominated GOP Speaker-Designate Tom Emmer.
In a Tuesday Truth Social post, Trump referred to Emmer as a "Globalist" and "RINO," a term which stands for "Republican in name only." The former President said voting for Emmer would be a "tragic mistake."
"I have many wonderful friends wanting to be Speaker of the House, and some are truly great warriors," Trump wrote. "RINO Tom Emmer, who I do not know well, is not one of them."
Trump also criticized Emmer for not respecting the "Power of a Trump Endorsement" or the "breadth and scope of MAGA-MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
The former President also said Emmer has spent more time defending Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar than Trump.
"He is totally out of touch with Republican voters," Trump added, criticizing the legitimacy of Emmer's claims of supporting the former President.
"Has he only changed because that's what it takes to win?" Trump asked. "The Republican Party cannot take that chance, because that's not where the American First Voters are."
"Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!" Trump concluded.
Trump's comment follows his repost of investigative journalist Laura Loomer's video revealing Emmer had ties to billionaire and philanthropist George Soros and had previously expressed interest in abolishing the electoral college.
Along with Emmer, eight other House Republicans were in the running for Speakership including Jack Bergman of Michigan, Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, Mike Johnson of Louisiana, Dan Meuser of Pennsylvania, Gary Palmer of Alabama, Austin Scott of Georgia, Pete Sessions of Texas, and Byron Donalds of Florida.
After several ballots within the Republican Conference, the Majority Whip defeated runner-up Johnson with a vote of 117-97.
Emmer is the third GOP nominee for Speaker since California Rep. Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the office of Speaker of the House earlier this month.
Prior to Emmer’s nomination, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise had secured the GOP nomination, though withdrew his candidacy after he was unable to secure a majority 217 votes to assume Speakership. Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan was later selected as the GOP nominee for Speaker, though was unable to secure 217 votes in Congress across three ballots held last week.
Jordan was removed as the GOP nominee on Friday after the Republican Conference held a secret ballot.
Emmer’s nomination for Speaker follows weeks of House Republican infighting after Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz spearheaded the effort to remove McCarthy from the seat.
McCarthy is the first Speaker in U.S. history to be ousted from the office.
The former Speaker supported Scalise and Jordan in their bids for Speakership and has thrown support behind Emmer’s nomination.
“He sets himself head and shoulders above all those others who want to run,” McCarthy said of Emmer during a Sunday appearance on NBC News. “We need to get him elected this week and move on.”
