Trump Says Biden 'Couldn't Have Been Nicer' During Phone Call After Assassination Attempt

Former President Donald Trump has praised President Joe Biden, saying he "couldn't have been nicer" during a phone call after the assassination attempt at the former president's Pennsylvania rally on Saturday.

ABC News' Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl spoke to Trump on Monday and asked him if being shot has "changed him."

"I don’t like to think about that, but, yes," Trump told Karl, saying it "has an impact."

Asked about the phone call with Biden on Saturday, Trump said the conversation was "very nice."

"He couldn’t have been nicer," Trump said of his political rival.

During an interview with NBC's Lester Holt on Monday, Biden was also asked about the call, and he said the conversation was "very cordial."

"I told him how concerned I was and wanted to make sure I knew how he was actually doing. He sounded good. He said he was fine. And he thanked me for calling him. I told him he was literally in the prayers of Jill and me, and I hoped his whole family was weathering this," Biden said.

On Sunday, Trump told the New York Post that he had thrown out his Republican National Convention speech, which attacked the Biden administration, and would instead give one focused on unity.

“I had all prepared an extremely tough speech, really good, all about the corrupt, horrible administration,” he said. “But I threw it away.”

The former president also discussed the speech change in an interview with the Washington Examiner on Monday.

Trump told the outlet, “The speech I was going to give on Thursday was going to be a humdinger. Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now.”

“This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago.”

Trump is scheduled to speak at the RNC on Thursday.

The attempted assassin fatally shot former fire chief Corey Comperatore, who was shielding his family from the bullets when he was struck. Two other rallygoers were critically injured but are now in stable condition.

The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was fatally shot by a counter sniper moments after shooting Trump in the ear.
