Trump Gives Gov. Newsom New Nickname

'Isn't that his name? Newscum'

Trump Gives Gov. Newsom New Nickname

Former President Donald Trump gave California Gov. Gavin Newsom a new nickname on Thursday.

The former president dubbed the California governor "Newscum" while speaking in Eagle Pass, Texas to discuss the nation's southern border crisis.

Trump touted his record on border security during his administration between January 2017 and January 2021.

"We had the most secure border and people weren't coming because they knew they weren't going to get in," he said.

The former president then transitioned toward progressive Democratic policies like free education and medical care supported by governors including Newsom.

"All the promises that are made. No wonder they come," Trump continued before taking a swipe at Newsom. "You look at what this governor Newscum from California. Isn't that his name? Newscum."

"What he's done to California is unbelievable," he added.

"People are pouring in," he continued. "They think they're gonna get medical aid, and our soldiers, our vets aren't being taken care of, but people that come into our country illegally are."

During his 2024 CPAC speech last weekend, Trump similarly took issue with Newsom's handling of the state.

“A lot of people think Gavin Newsom is going to run. In a certain way, I hope so,” Trump said. “I hope so. Because he’s destroyed California.”

The former president then referenced Newsom's previous interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity in which the California governor touted his success in the state.

"I'm saying, wait a minute, the place is failing," Trump said. "They don't have water. They're notifying people in Beverly Hills you can only use 40 gallons of water."

"People don't have water, and the farmland is barren," he continued.

Trump went on to criticize California's election integrity and suggested the state would flip Republican if votes were accurately counted.

During a Sunday interview with NBC News' Kristen Welker on Meet the Press, Newsom referred to Trump as "unhinged."

“I think he’s weakness masquerading as strength. I think he’s more unhinged. He’s more – he’s less interesting than he was even a few years ago,” Newsom said.

Newsom also countered concerns over President Joe Biden's age, saying it was a feature of his tenure in office.

"It's because of his age that he's been so successful," Newsom said. "It's because of the wisdom, and the character that's developed over years that we have the CHIPS and Science Act, the infrastructure bill, and the PACT Act, and the Safer Communities Act, and because we've seen these bipartisan accomplishments because of his capacity of understanding, because of his leadership."

Biden also visited the Texas border in Brownsville on Thursday and referred to critics of climate change concerns as "Neanderthals."
