Taylor Lorenz Claims The New York Times Only Allows 'Right-Wing Opinions'

Former New York Times reporter and author Taylor Lorenz claimed her former outlet only allows "right-wing opinions."

The tech reporter, who currently writes for The Washington Post, made her claim in a Threads post.

“Anyone who’s worked as a journalist at the NYT knows that journalists there are absolutely allowed to loudly espouse political opinions, you just have to espouse the *right* political opinions. Right wing opinions are fine, left-wing opinions are not,” Lorenz wrote in her post.

The Washington Post reporter also linked to a Substack article discussing The New York Times discouraging staffers from taking public stances opposing Israel.

The Substack article, written by Jack Mirkinson, claims New York Times staffers expressing support for Palestinians amid their conflict with Israelis have "no future" at the outlet. The article further criticizes the outlet for allowing writers to use terms such as "woke-ism."

In a follow up post, Lorenz provided an example from her personal experience working with the outlet saying, "I wasn’t allowed to express the ‘opinion’ that online harassment was a bad thing, in the midst of having my entire family harassed and doxxed."

"I also once had to delete a tweet where I said I don’t like living in America lol," she added. "But saying ‘wokes’ are taking over campus is totally fine in their book.”

X users who criticized and mocked Lorenz's claim included X owner and tech mogul Elon Musk, who responded to a post about Lorenz's comments saying, "The parody writes itself."

Fellow former reporter for The New York Times Adam Rubenstein said Lorenz "lives in an alternate reality."

"BREAKING: Taylor Lorenz is still completely insane," wrote another user.

In 2022, Lorenz published a piece in The Washington Post which revealed the identity of Libs of TikTok creator, Chaya Raichik, who had previously kept her identity anonymous. The story originally shared a link to Raichik's real estate license which included her name, license number, and an address associated with Raichik. The link was later removed after Lorenz was accused of doxxing the Libs of TikTok creator.

The Washington Post reporter is outspoken about her liberal political views and has been a vocal critic of relaxing COVID-19 safety measures in the post-pandemic world.
