Staffer for Senator Rand Paul Brutally Stabbed in Washington, DC

A staffer for Senator Rand Paul was brutally stabbed in Washington, DC, on Saturday.

The staff member's name has not been released, and the senator has asked for people to give him privacy at this time.

According to the DC Metropolitan Police Department, the incident occurred on the 1300 block of H Street just before 5:30 p.m.

When police arrived on the scene, they found the staff member with multiple stab wounds to his head and torso. He was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, but is expected to recover, according to a source close to the situation.

Glynn Neal, 42, has been arrested and charged with assault with intent to kill over the attack.

Neal was released from prison one day before the stabbing, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons records. According to a report from Fox 5, "he spent nearly 12 years behind bars for compelling two North Carolina women to engage in prostitution through the use of threats."

According to charging documents, Neal heard "voices" inside his head telling him to do it. There is no indication that the attack was politically motivated.

โ€œ[The witness] stated that he and [the victim] were walking eastbound on the 1300 block of H Street when [Neal], who was hiding in a corner, popped out of the corner and proceeded to stab [the victim] with a knife multiple times,โ€ the incident report states.

The Kentucky senator asked for prayers for a speedy recovery.

"This past weekend a member of my staff was brutally attacked in broad daylight in Washington, D.C. I ask you to join Kelley and me in praying for a speedy and complete recovery, and thanking the first responders, hospital staff, and police for their diligent actions," Sen. Paul's statement read. "We are relieved to hear the suspect has been arrested. At this time we would ask for privacy, so everyone can focus on healing and recovery."
