Man Arrested After Driving Through Gate at FBI Atlanta Field Office

A man has been arrested after allegedly driving his vehicle through the gate at the FBI Atlanta field office.

The incident took place just after noon on Monday.

The man, who has not been publicly identified, was driving a Buick Encore with South Carolina license plates when he attempted to follow an employee through the gate.

However, as soon as the first car drove through, a pop-up wedge barrier engaged to stop a vehicle from following.

The suspect crashed into the barrier and totaled his vehicle, FBI spokesperson Tony Thomas told NBC News. Seemingly undeterred, the man exited his SUV and ran past the gate before being tackled. He was later transported to a hospital for evaluation.

"Several of our special agents who were passing by apprehended him," Peter Ellis, the bureau's assistant special agent in charge of the Atlanta office, told the station.

"He was not associated with this facility," Ellis added.

A bomb squad searched the vehicle as a precaution, but it was clear. No weapons were found inside the Buick.

The FBI said the motive for the crash is not yet clear.

Asked by a reporter if there is any evidence that it was a potential terrorist attack, an FBI spokesperson said that he could not answer that "at this point.

The FBI emphasized that there is no threat to public safety.
