Justin Amash Considers Launching Senate Campaign

Former Michigan Rep. Justin Amash is considering a run at the United States Senate.

Amash represented Michigan's 3rd district from 2011 to 2021 as a Republican. In 2019, Amash declared himself as an independent and left the Republican Party. In 2020, the Michigan representative joined the Libertarian Party and later launched an exploratory committee for his nomination as the Libertarian Party's presidential candidate.

The former Michigan representative announced he was considering a run to represent Michigan in the Senate in a Thursday X post.

"I've been humbled in recent weeks by the many people who have urged me to run for Senate in Michigan and to do so by joining the Republican Party," Amash wrote.

"They see what I see: contenders for the seat who are uninspired, unserious, and unprepared to tackle the chief impediment to liberty and economic prosperity—an overgrown and abusive government that strives to centralize power and snuff out individualism," he continued. "The people of Michigan and our country deserve better."

Amash announced he was launching a Senate Exploratory Committee as he considers a Senate run.

"We need a principled, consistent constitutional conservative in the Senate—someone with a record of taking on the bipartisan oligarchy, defending sound money and free speech, fighting the surveillance state and military-industrial complex, and protecting all our rights," Amash wrote. "The stakes are high: freedom, social cooperation, and human progress itself."

In conclusion, Amash thanked supporters for their encouragement.

Former running mate for the Libertarian Party's 2020 presidential candidate Spike Cohen endorsed Amash for Senate on Thursday.

"If you're a Michigan voter, vote for Justin Amash for U.S. Senate in the Republican primary on August 6th," Cohen wrote, noting voters were not required to be a registered Republican to vote in the primary.

A series of prominent Libertarian personalities, including 2016 Libertarian presidential candidate runner-up Austin Petersen, offered their support.

"Where do I send money and support?" Petersen wrote.

Libertarian and podcaster Clint Russell also threw support behind Amash's potential Senate run.

"Amash and Rand would be an incredible duo to have in the Senate," Russell said of the Kentucky Senator Rand Paul. "I cannot support this strongly enough."

In December 2019, Amash became the first Republican member of Congress to support the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump.
