Democrat Minnesota State Senator Arrested for Burglary is Stripped of Committee Assignments

Democrat Minnesota State Sen. Nicole Mitchell has been stripped of committee assignments and caucus meetings after being arrested for burglary at her stepmother's house last week.

Police found Mitchell wearing all black with a flashlight inside her stepmother's home after she called the police about an intruder.

Fox 9 reports, "While speaking with investigators, Sen. Mitchell claimed she entered the house to get items that belonged to her late father. Mitchell claimed the woman, identified as a non-blood relative, had stopped contacting her and refused to give her the items, such as pictures, a flannel shirt, ashes, and other sentimental items."

"I was just trying to get a couple of my dad's things because you wouldn't talk to me anymore," Mitchell allegedly said while being arrested.

However, one of the items Mitchell was taking was a laptop that belonged to her stepmother.

Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy, also a Democrat, said in a statement, "This is a tragic situation, and there are still questions that need to be answered. The legal investigation is ongoing, and last week, we referred her case to the Senate Subcommittee on Ethical Conduct. While the case is under review both in the Senate and in the courts, Senator Mitchell will be relieved of her committee assignments and removed from caucus meetings."

Mitchell has been charged with first-degree burglary and is scheduled to appear in court on June 10.

"GOP lawmakers have since filed an ethics complaint on the matter and made a motion to expedite the investigation," Fox 9 reports. "Although accused legislators typically have up to 30 days before an investigation begins, Republicans noted that the legislative session would be over by then."
