Kentucky State Police reported a 16-year-old accused of murdering his mother and sister has broken out of jail and is at large as of Monday morning.
The juvenile inmate was identified as Luke Craig. Craig was charged with two counts of murder-domestic violence in September for allegedly murdering Tefani Noe, 33, and Brooke Goggin, 12. Obituaries identify them as his mother and sister.
On September 24, 2020, state troopers found the two female victims around 9:30 P.M. on Corinth Road in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. They had been shot to death in their home.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reported that Craig “allegedly led police on a chase through Anderson, Franklin and Shelby counties before he was stopped on the Watterson Expressway in Louisville.”
The Kentucky State Police have not released any information that would indicate what lead to the murders.
Sergeant Bernis Napier told the Lexington Herald-Leader that Investigators had contacted family members to tell them that Craig had escaped and to ask if they had contact with him. Napier did not say if they had or not.
Newsweek notes that although they are widely covered, prison breaks are a rare occurrence. “In 2018, the most recent year for which relevant data is available on German data compilation site Statista, 2,353 of the U.S. prison population's 1,465,200 prisoners escaped detention,” the news outlet found.
The teenager reportedly escaped from the Fayette Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Lexington, Kentucky around 3:45 P.M on July 18.
Three Franklin County Schools went into lockdown on Monday morning after local law enforcement received reports of a possible sighting of Craig. Western Hills, Bondurant Middle, Bridgeport Elementary, and the central office were locked down for less than an hour, according to The State Journal.
Craig is described as a white male who weighs 130 pounds and stands 5-foot-5 tall. He was wearing a green jumpsuit and black sneakers at the time of his escape. He is considered a threat to public safety.
