President Donald Trump’s campaign says he is “fine” after shots were fired at a rally in Pennsylvania.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee was rushed offstage by the Secret Service in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13.
As Trump addressed a crowd of his supporters, a cloud of smoke was observed as gunshots were heard. Reports suggest there may have been blood above Trump’s right ear as he was hustled from the podium.
“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” said Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the campaign in a post. “He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”
"An incident occurred the evening of July 13 at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania," the Secret Service said in a statement. "The Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe. This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when available."
According to NBC News, reporters at the rally initially thought the sounds were fireworks before law enforcement rushed to the former president.
Trump could be seen holding his fist in the air as agents encircled him and moved him off the stage.
In the hour after the shooting, the phrase “God Bless President Trump” began to trend on X.
This is a developing story.
