Shooting at A Bank in Louisville Leaves 4 Dead, 8 Injured

Four people were killed at a shooting at Old National Bank in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

Eight other people are injured as a result of the April 10 shooting. They have been taken to local hospitals where at least two are in critical condition.

Louisville Metro Police Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey told reporters that the suspected shooter is also dead. He did not say if the shooter died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot or if the person was killed in an exchange with police.

“This is a tragic event,” he said. “But it was the heroic response of officers that made sure that no more people were more seriously injured than what happened.”

Humphrey said the suspect was a “lone gunman” and that there is no active threat to the public.

"It appears the shooter was – I don't know if it was an active employee or a former employee – but the shooter did have a connection to the location," said Humphrey.

Local law enforcement arrived on the scene three minutes after receiving reports of shots fired at the bank around 8:30 AM – 30 minutes before the bank what scheduled to open. The officers exchanged fire with the suspect and two were injured as a result. One officer is reportedly in surgery.

An area resident told USA Today he was walking home from the gym when he saw police cars arrive at the bank and approximately 20 officers go inside.

"The sound is what I keep thinking about. It was so loud," said Terrance Sullivan, who described hearing 10-15 gunshots followed by people screaming inside the bank. "People in my building who were inside could hear it. Being outside on the street as it happened — I've heard gunshots before, but not that many like that."

Kentucky’s political leaders have denounced the violence and thanked law enforcement for its rapid response to the situation.

Elaine and I are devastated by the news coming out of Louisville this morning,” tweeted Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. “Thank you to LMPD and our first responders for your bravery at the scene. We send our prayers to the victims, their families, and the city of Louisville as we await more information.”

"This is awful. I have a very close friend that didn't make it today,” said Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear at a press conference. “And I have another close friend who didn't, either, and one who is at the hospital that I hope is gonna make it through.”

Jim Ryan, the CEO of Old National Bank, released a statement saying the organization is “deploying employee assistance support and keeping everyone affected by this tragedy in our thoughts and prayers” while they await more information about the shooting, per ABC News

"The safety of Old National Bank employees and everyone we serve in our banking center locations is paramount,” said Ryan.

Authorities have not released the shooter's identity or any information about the firearm used in the attack.
