Ohio Governor Calls Special Session To Ensure Biden Is On the Ballot

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is calling a special session of the state’s Republican-led legislature to address a timing issue that could keep President Joe Biden’s name off of the state’s ballot on Election Day.

Currently, the state’s deadline for political parties to submit candidates for the ballot is August 7. However, the Democratic National Convention, where candidates are formally nominated, won’t take place until August 19-22.

The special session is scheduled to take place Tuesday, May 28.

“The Legislature had [a] session yesterday and again failed to take any action. This is simply unacceptable,” DeWine said during a press conference. “Ohio is running out of time to get Joe Biden, the sitting president of the United States, on the ballot this fall. Failing to do so is simply not acceptable. This is a ridiculous — this is an absurd situation.”

He explained, “The purpose of this session will be for the General Assembly to pass legislation ensuring that both major presidential candidates will be on the Ohio ballot in November, as well as legislation that would prohibit campaign spending by foreign nationals.”

While Ohio’s senate has already passed bills to remedy the ballot situation, “the House of Representatives has failed to do this,” DeWine added.

Similar scenarios have occurred in past elections, in 2012 and 2020.

Not all Republicans and conservatives support the special session to have Biden’s name on the Ohio ballot, citing Democratic-led legal machinations to remove former President Trump’s name from ballots and the willful scheduling of the Democrats’ convention after Ohio’s deadline.

“Democrats were too busy trying to keep Trump off the ballot to get Biden on it. F*** ‘em,” attorney and rockstar conservative commentator Mike Cernovich said in a post on social media platform X.

Attorney and GOP activist Rogan O’Handley, whose public profiles use the moniker DC Draino, wrote on X:

"Ohio Gov. @GovMikeDeWine is a coward. Democrats are filing lawsuits and indicting Trump to keep him off state ballots and this guy is calling a legislative session to get Biden *on* the ballot.

Even though it was the Biden who screwed up the registration

Backstabbing RINO [Republican in name only]!"
