NYC Mayor Wants Kids 5-11 to Show Proof of Vaccination Before Entering Private Businesses

Departing NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters he would like to see a COVID vaccine passport program instituted for children between the ages of 5 and 11.

“At what point will you ask them to start checking vax cards for five- to eleven-year-olds?” asked one journalist.

“That’s a very good question. Honestly, one we need to focus on now," the Mayor said. "We want to get to the day where we actually can vaccinate the youngest New Yorkers and get that rolling!”

He added: “We’re not going to settle this immediately. It will take a number of weeks for that age group to get vaccinated.”

Any business in New York City not complying with the mayor’s passport program faces an official warning, followed by a $1,000 fine, then a $2,000 fine, then a $5,000 fine for repeat offenses.

San Francisco Health officials made similar statements earlier this month.

“We definitely want to wait and make sure children have an opportunity to get vaccinated,” Health Officer Susan Philip said. “That will happen no sooner than about eight weeks after the vaccine is available to kids, so there will be a limited time in which there will not be those requirements in our plan."
