New Study Shows Murders Jumped 44% in 2021 Compared to 2019, Major Spike in Violent Crime

A new study from the Council on Criminal Justice published this week shows 5 percent increase in homicides from 2020 into 2021, and a 44 percent increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Murders across 22 major U.S. cities increased 44% in 2021 compared to 2019 and 5% compared to 2020, an updated study shows. There were 218 more murders in the 22 cities in 2021 — a 44% increase compared to 2019, representing nearly 1,300 additional lives lost since three years ago, according to updated findings from the Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ), a nonpartisan criminal justice policy organization,” reports Fox News.

“A new analysis from CCJ finds that homicide counts continued to rise in major U.S. cities in 2021, but the pace of the increase slowed. The number of murders in 2021 was 5% higher than in 2020, an increase of 218 killings in the 22 cities included in the study,” posed the organization on Twitter.

“Sixteen of the 22 cities reported a rise in homicide last year, ranging from 108% in St. Petersburg to less than 1% in Memphis and Baltimore. Six of the cities, including Seattle and Omaha, reported declines in homicide in 2021,” adds the group.
