Though he might face an easy pathway to winning the nomination, the outcome of one or more legal cases against him could spell trouble in the general election. Trump is currently facing four sets of criminal indictments that include 91 charges. And new polling is showing that should he be found guilty of a felony charge in any of those cases, his electability could drop substantially. The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll of registered voters shows that if convicted of a felony, 58 percent say they would not vote for the former president in the 2024 general election. When broken down by political affiliation, 55 percent of independents, 91 percent of Democrats, and 28 percent of Republicans say they would not cast their ballot for Trump, if convicted. Among Republicans, this number is an improvement from the same poll taken last August, which showed that 45 percent would not vote for him if convicted, while only 28 percent said they would. In the latest survey, 43 percent of Republicans now say they “would vote for Donald Trump” if convicted of a felony. The most recent figures are a sign that intra-party support is growing despite the criminal prosecutions, which many Republicans view as politically motivated. Upon news that more than half of the electorate say they would abandon the GOP frontrunner if he is convicted on a single count, Trump’s opponents were energized and renewed calls to select a different candidate in the presidential primaries. Alyssa Farah Griffin, conservative co-host of the television show The View, posted on social media platform X: “When is the GOP going to wake the hell up?!” A teacher, posting on the same platform under the username “WM,” said: “This is going to be an historic defeat and a complete annihilation of MAGA as a movement.”Coming off of a decisive win in the Iowa caucuses where he soundly defeated his Republican challengers, former President Donald Trump is now considered by many to be all but guaranteed the GOP presidential nomination.
