Lawmaker rips the nation's former pandemic and vaccine czar during a congressional hearing

Marjorie Taylor Greene: 'You Belong In Prison, Dr. Fauci'

U.S. House Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) excoriated Dr. Anthony Fauci during a congressional hearing by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic over the federal response to COVID-19.

In the heated exchange, Greene ripped Fauci over reports that the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), an organization he headed from 1984 to 2022, conducted cruel experiments on beagle puppies.

As outlined in a letter signed by 24 members of Congress, the NIAID spent $1.68 million in taxpayer funds on tests involving beagles between six and eight months old, including slitting some of the dogs’ vocal cords to prevent researchers from having “to listen to the pained cries of the beagle puppies.”

Greene cited an experiment where researchers trapped puppies’ heads in mesh cages and exposed them to sand flies, telling Fauci, “as a dog lover, this is disgusting, and evil what you signed off on and these experiments that happened to beagles, paid for by the American taxpayer.”

Allegations about NIAID funding the beagle research originated with the animal rights group White Coat Waste Project (WCW) and were initially dismissed as being false, after NIAID denied involvement.

Researchers who published a scientific paper in July 2021 lisitng NIAID as a funder of the experiments published a correction in October 2021.

However, WCW, through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, obtained documentation confirming that NIAID did fund the beagle project.

Throughout her questioning, Greene refused to call Fauci doctor, instead referring to him as “Mr. Fauci,” a move that drew anger from Democratic members of the committee. Pressing him on his advocacy for social distancing and masking guidance, Greene asked, “Do the American people deserve to be abused like that, mister Fauci? Because you’re not doctor, you’re mister Fauci in my few minutes.”

When a Democratic member of the subcommittee asked Subcommittee Chairman Brad Wenstrup if lawmakers are able to “deny that a doctor is a doctor, just because we don’t want him to be,” Greene replied: “Yes. Because in my time, that man does not deserve to have a license. As a matter of fact, it should be revoked and he belongs in prison.”

Greene’s remarks were interrupted by lawmakers expressing animosity over their belief that the questioning was not in line with the House’s standards of decorum. Wenstrup then instructed Greene to address Fauci as doctor.

After Greene was permitted to continue, she added, “You know what this committee should be doing? We should be recommending you to be prosecuted. We should be writing a criminal referral because you should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. You belong in prison, Doctor Fauci.”
