Conservative commentator Candace Owens will no longer work with The Daily Wire.
The news and media outlet’s CEO Jeremey Boreing was the first to publicly announce the split.
“Daily Wire and Candace Owens have ended their relationship,” he wrote on X on March 22 just before 9:30 AM ET.
“The rumors are true—I am finally free,” Owens said on X. “There will be many announcements in the weeks to come.”
She also directed her supporters to her YouTube channel, where she said she will bring back her show “after a brief hiatus.”
Owens gained prominence in American political spheres during President Donald Trump’s first campaign. She is the founder of BLEXIT, a subsidiary of Turning Point USA that focuses on cultural issues experienced by African Americans, and wrote the book Blackout: How Black America Can Make Its Second Escape from the Democrat Plantation,
She joined The Daily Wire in November of 2020 and relocated to Nashville.
“Candace is going to make the move with us to Nashville,” Boreing said at the time. “I don’t want to tell people too much what we’re working on … but we are working on a show together; Candace and I have been collaborating behind the scenes.”
He said Owens would host a show that would be filmed in front of a live studio audience.
“I’m so excited. I think the time is now. The energy feels right,” Owens said.
In more recent months, Owens and members of The Daily Wire have been at odds. She sparred with co-founder Ben Shapiro, who dared her to quit after taking offense to a Bible verse she posted in the weeks after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
“You have been acting unprofessional and emotionally unhinged for weeks now. And we have all had to sit back and allow it and have all tried to exercise exceeding understanding for your raw emotion,” she responded on X. “But you cross a certain line when you come for scripture and read yourself into it. I will not tolerate it.”
Shapiro had previously been filmed saying Owens’ behavior was “disgraceful, without a doubt” and “ridiculous.”
“Everyone can see the moves that she is making and the things that she is saying and I find them disreputable,” said Shapiro.
At other times, Owens defended Daily Wire from outside attack. She called show host Steven Crowder "unrelatable" amid his public dispute over a contract he turned down from the company after asking for $120 million.
"It is scary to go out on your own," Owens said on the January 2023 episode of her podcast. "I've thought about it. I've thought about going out on my own. It is a lot of work. Maybe down the line, I will."
