House Oversight Committee Issues Subpoenas Over Tim Walz’s Alleged Ties to Chinese Communist Party

Whistleblower says DHS maintains a cache of classified and unclassified documents tying Walz to the CCP

House Oversight Committee Issues Subpoenas Over Tim Walz’s Alleged Ties to Chinese Communist Party

The House Oversight Committee has issued subpoenas seeking information from federal law enforcement officials regarding Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz and his alleged ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

In August, Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) launched an investigation into Walz, currently serving as the governor of Minnesota, after reports surfaced alleging connections to CCP entities and officials.

Comer says the committee received whistleblower testimony detailing a Microsoft Teams group chat among members of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that included information about Walz and potential links to the Chinese government.

The committee is subpoenaing all intelligence information related to Walz from November 2023 to the present.

In a media release, Comer said that the revelations come amid “a government-wide investigation of how federal agencies are addressing the CCP’s infiltration and influence campaign to weaken and corrupt” the U.S.

Following briefings with more than 20 federal agencies, the committee learned that the CCP had prioritized influencing American government leaders, including governors, Comer wrote in a letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

According to the letter accompanying the subpoena, Walz has been mentioned in both classified and unclassified communications regarding his alleged connections to the CCP.

Walz’s team has denied the allegations, defending his record on China.

"Republicans are twisting basic facts and desperately lying,” said Walz’s spokesperson Teddy Tschann. “Vice President Harris and Governor Walz will ensure we win the competition with China, and will always stand up for our values and interests in the face of China's threats."

Comer stressed that the investigation began “long before” Walz was elevated to vice president on the Democratic ticket.

“If a state governor and major political party’s nominee for Vice President of the United States has been a witting or unwitting participant in the CCP’s efforts to weaken our nation, this would strongly suggest that there are alarming weaknesses in the federal government’s effort to defend the United States from the CCP’s political warfare that must be urgently addressed,” Comer stated.

“The information required of DHS by the Committee’s subpoena will inform the Committee’s understanding of how successful the CCP has been in waging political warfare in and against the United States, how effectively federal agencies are addressing the communist regime’s campaign, and what reforms are necessary to counter this threat,” he added.

Rep. Eric Burlison (R-Mo.), a member of the Oversight Committee, said in a post on X that Walz had visited China more than 30 times and participated in a number of activities that benefited China.

The announcement about the new subpoena and Walz’s alleged deep ties to the CCP came just one day before Walz squared off with Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance in a televised debate.

Democrats mocked the subpoena, with one X user writing, “Tim Walz traveled to China about 30 times, most when he was a teacher working with exchange programs & not as a government official. Every year, there are tens of thousands of Americans who travel to China on a regular basis. Does Comer plan to investigate these people as well?”
