California Senator Dianne Feinstein currently lies in state at the San Francisco City Hall.
Mourners will be able to pay their respect to the Democrat from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Feinstein died on Sept. 28 at her residence in Washington, D.C. at the age of 90.
A funeral service will be held at the Herbst Theatre at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center on Oct. 5. California Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi is expected to attend the event in addition to Vice President Kamala Harris and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The public will be able to watch the service via a simulcast at City Hall's North Light Court or online, per The San Francisco Standard.
A private burial attended only by the family will follow.
Feinstein’s daughter, Katherine Feinstein, accompanied her body on a military flight back to California. Pelosi and James Sauls, Feinstein’s chief of staff, were also aboard the flight.
Her body was then escorted by San Francisco Police, who noted people in the street cheered for the procession.
“Our Solos were honored to escort late Senator Dianne Feinstein’s body from SFO to Sinai Memorial Chapel,” the department wrote on X on Oct 1. “A special route was planned to take her through San Francisco to honor her legacy. People noticing the escort stopped in their tracks to applaud and cheer her name."
Feinstein was the longest-serving member of the Senate Democratic Conference. After serving as Mayor of San Francisco, Feinstein was elected to federal office in 1992.
In a statement after her death, Pelosi called Feinstein a “dear friend.”
“For decades, Senator Feinstein was a pillar of public service in California: from San Francisco’s City Hall to the United States Capitol. Her indomitable, indefatigable leadership made a magnificent difference for our national security and personal safety, the health of our people and our planet, and the strength of our Democracy,” said Pelosi. “Dianne was a pioneering woman leader, who served as San Francisco’s first female Mayor with unmatched courage, poise and grace. Standing strong amid horror and heartbreak – from the brutal murders of Harvey Milk and George Moscone to the deadly HIV/AIDs epidemic – she offered our City a beacon of strength and hope.”
“Personally, it was a great honor to serve alongside Dianne for decades – from the hilly streets of San Francisco to the hallowed halls of Congress,” she continued. “Dianne’s extraordinary career will continue to inspire countless young women and girls to pursue public service for generations to come.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Democratic activist Laphonza Butler to take over the now-vacant seat. Butler is the President of EMILY’s List, a political group that backs female Democrats who are pro-abortion while they run for public office.
