‘Defund Police’ Democrats Spent More than $350,000 on Private Security in 2021

Progressive House Democrats — better known as ‘The Squad’ — spent more than $350,000 on private security last year.

Throughout 2021, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spent $75,000 on her security detail. Congressman Cori Bush paid $200,000 for private guards. Other notable figures included Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib.

The lawmakers routinely demanded the country “defund” police departments in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder in 2020.

"Defunding police means defunding police," Ocasio-Cortez said in late June 2020.

“The ‘defund the police’ movement, is one of reimagining the current police system to build an entity that does not violate us, while relocating funds to invest in community services. Let’s be clear, the people who now oppose this, have always opposed calls for systematic change,” posted Ilhan Omar at the time.

"Yes, I support the defunding of the police. If we reinvest in jobs there won't be a need for as large of a police force as we have and there won't be a need for the militarization of the police. The whole country is rising up because we're tired of waiting,” added New York’s Jamaal Bowman.
